DIY Soda Can Candle Holders

So I came up with this idea when my family and I were going through a lot of cans of soda (I've since given them up... again) and our card for the dump expired (it costs $100 a year to take your trash off and recycle in this town).  Don't worry.  We weren't letting trash pile up.  We have a sanitation service that picks up our garbage weekly; however, they do not do recycling hence the reason for the garbage dump card.  I hated seeing all those cans thrown away and knowing that they'd be sitting in a landfill when they could be recycled or reused, so I decided to come up with a way to make use of these empty soda cans.

All I did was cut the 2/3 top of the can off with a good pair of durable scissors and then trimmed it a bit to even out the sides.  I then measured some scrapbook paper I bought at Ross to match the height of the can and cut that out then pasted it on with some rubber cement.  Next, I poured some rice in to keep the candles stabilized (I would have rather used little decorative pebbles, but I was fresh out).  Finally, I placed little tea light candles in each holder and that's it!

I'm sure there are some many different variations on this you can do.  You could probably leave more can and put a larger candle in.  And instead of using scrapbook paper, you could paint your own designs if you're good at painting or even draw on some plain white paper and paste it on.  Instead of rice or pebbles, you could use sand and make your candle holders beach themed.  And you could probably come up with something creative to use for the unused parts of the can. The only limit is your imagination!

I love my little candles.  Was thinking about perhaps doing a tutorial on them on YouTube, but this time I'll be sure to stock up on tiny pebbles from the arts supply store and maybe come up with some creative takes on it.  Who know's?

I hope to whomever may stumble upon this post that you like it and if you have any other creative uses for used soda cans or any other reusable material, feel free to comment and let me know.  I love DIY and reusing things in interesting ways, so please do share!

Well, that's it for now!

Sunday... What can I say about Sunday?

It's exciting in no way whatsoever.  Hence my reason for being here on Blogger today.  Not that I've been a lazy bum today, because I haven't.  I cleaned the house, did all the laundry and finished a homework assignment.  Yay!  Go me!  Now that I'm finished with everything (except for the other homework assignment that I should be doing right now), I'm a bit bored.  Thought I'd just come here to ramble...  Who care's?  Nobody reads these anyway.

Hmm... I don't know why, but I'm really feeling like trying my hand at the YouTube thing again... Break my cycle of "Oooh, I want to make videos." *makes videos* "Wow... they kind of suck... Well, I've got time to improve." *uploads videos to YouTube* "All right!  There they are! *a bit of time passes* "Man, I look so goofy. What was I thinking?" *a bit more time passes and I rewatch a few* "Wow, I suck.  I'm taking these things down." And I've done that a few times already in the past few years.  Maybe the 4th time's the charm?? Who knows?

Well, if it happens, it happens.  In the meantime, I guess I'm content just typing here in this blog.  It's nice and cozy. :)

So ready for autumn! Still got a month to go, though.  Sorry, just randomly thought about it while looking outside at the green leaves on the trees.  I feel like it's time for them to be brown (yes, brown.  None of the trees here turn nice, pretty yellow, orange, and red hues like the place I used to live. :/) and the air to be cool.  I know that summer is my favorite season... but, I'm a bit tired of melting and autumn's a close 2nd. :)  I'm already ready for Halloween and Thanksgiving.  I LOVE Thanksgiving.  Mostly because of all the food... I love to eat.  Can't wait for that homemade pumpkin pie with homemade whipped cream on top.  My mouth is watering just thinking about it...

Well, I better go before I get drool on the keyboard.  Talk to you all later (that is, if anyone reads this, and if so, what's your favorite part about autumn? If you even have a favorite part.  If you don't, and you just hate autumn so much, then what is that makes it so unbearable?)  Anyway, I'm off!  Have a good Sunday!  Make it a FUN DAY!

Where have I been?

Wow... I seem to have forgotten about this place.  It's been nearly a year, but somehow I find myself wandering back over here.  Life just got in the way: moving back home, school, my mom's death.  It's been a crazy past several months.  But, I feel like I've really come out a lot stronger and a lot more motivated to reach my goals.  I'm appreciating life a lot more and spending more time with the ones I love.  I really hate that it's taken the death of my mom to give me this new outlook on life, but I'm happy I took something from that bad situation and turned it into something positive.

Moving on, though... School's back in, so it's probably obvious what I'll be spending a lot of my time doing, but in my free time, I'd like to start doing more with my blog and, perhaps, even Youtube.  That may be a little ambitious for me, but we'll see.  In the mean time, I'll dazzle you with pictures of my cats.

Wilhelmina (a.k.a. Kitten)

Princess

Abigail (a.k.a. Scrabbers)

And...

A new addition to come... :)

Oh, shit.  It's begun!  I'm becoming the crazy cat lady.
